8 Limbs: Niyama 4: Svadhyaya
“This being human is a guest house, each morning a new arrival” ~Rumi
Sva: self. Dhyaya: contemplation/study
Svadhyaya is the niyama that is all about self-study. By looking into the dark, we illuminate the stars of our being. By looking behind feelings, emotions and the chatter of the monkey mind, we can gain insight in our true state. Through self reflection and study, we get to know ourselves better. Just like when we practice postures that fold us forward, connecting our heart and mind closer to the earth, which is a meditative gesture, we are metaphorically looking inside. Take a moment and ask youself, “how am I doing today?” and do not feel the need to actually answer that. Give yourself the opportunity to explore that by noticing what comes up. Each day, each practice, a new answer.
By investigating our ways of being, including states of our mind, habits, blind spots and so forth, we will ultimately be able to understand we are much bigger than (the small “s”) self. When we experience these states (thoughts, insights, emotions, etc) we are allowed a chance to practice svadhyaya. How do you tap into higher sources of wisdom to lead to a greater understanding of who we really are?
Ways we can consider practicing svadhyaya: journaling (writing to gain insight), meditation (quiet reflection to observe without judgment), studying spiritual texts (philosophy as a means to understand the self), self reflection (analyzing actions/emotions), mantra (focus on inner awareness), asana (forward folds that turn the attention inward). These are just offerings for you to try and see what resonates. Take a moment to check in with yourself throughout your day and watch for spots of illumination and opportunities for learning. Svadhyaya is an every evolving practice.
